Climate

Wuhan has a humid subtropical climate (Koppen Cfa), with heavy summer rainfall and four distinct seasons. The summers are famously muggy, and dewpoints often rise to 26 degrees Celsius (79 F) or more. Along with Chongqing and Nanjing, the city used to be called one of the Three Furnaces of the Yangtze because of its hot summers. Newer climate data suggest it no longer belongs among the very hottest cities, and the list of the New Four Furnaces now names Chongqing, Fuzhou, Hangzhou and Nanchang.

Spring and autumn are mild, and winter is cool and fairly dry, with snow now and then. Averaged over 24 hours, January temperatures are 4.1 degrees Celsius (39.4 F) and July temperatures are 29.3 degrees (84.7 F), and the yearly mean is 17.4 degrees (63.3 F). Frost-free periods run from 211 to 272 days. Annual rain is just under 1,320 mm (52 in), and most of it comes between April and July. Possible sunshine goes from 30 percent in January up to 53 percent in August, adding up to 1,783 hours of bright sun a year in the city proper. The record low is minus 18.1 degrees (minus 1 F) on 31 January 1977. The record high is 39.7 degrees (103 F), reached both on 27 July 2017 and on 18 August 2022, and an unofficial 41.3 degrees (106 F) was noted on 10 August 1934.
